His Excellency Dr. Khalid Al-Sultan is a distinguished figure in the fields of energy, education, management, and governance. Throughout his career, he has held numerous significant leadership positions, most notably serving as President of King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy at ministerial rank from June 2018 until April 2022. He also served as Rector of King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in Dhahran for fifteen years, from May 2003 to May 2018, preceded by his role as Deputy Minister for Educational Affairs at the Ministry of Higher Education from August 1998 to 2003.
His Excellency’s responsibilities have spanned both academic and administrative roles. He served as Acting Rector of the University of Hail from 2005 to 2007 and held multiple academic positions at KFUPM, culminating in his role as Dean of the College of Computer Science and Engineering. He advanced through academic ranks to become a Professor. Dr. Al-Sultan has been a member of various prominent boards, notably serving on the Board of Directors of Saudi Aramco from 2007 until 2018, and as a Trustee of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) from 2008 until 2016. He also chaired the Board of Directors of the Saudi Electricity Company from 2018 to 2024. Currently, he serves on fifteen boards spanning government, private, and non-profit sectors and has previously participated in nearly forty boards during his professional and administrative career. Academically, His Excellency Dr. Khalid Al-Sultan earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Systems Engineering from KFUPM. He completed further graduate studies in the United States, obtaining a master's degree in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. He is also a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Michigan, USA.
